Lead with Faith: Becoming the Leader God Called You to Be

Writer: Brad AultBrad Ault

As a Christian man, you’re called to lead—but are you leading with the clarity, confidence, and purpose God intended? Leadership isn’t just about positions of power or titles; it’s about influence, service, and leaving a lasting impact. Whether you lead in your family, career, community, or church, authentic leadership comes from a foundation of faith and a heart aligned with God’s will.

The Call to Leadership

Too often, the world defines leadership in terms of success, status, and self-interest. However, God’s definition of leadership flips this idea on its head. The Bible teaches that leadership is about humility, service, and love. Christian men are called to lead with integrity and wisdom, making decisions that reflect God’s character and His purposes in every aspect of our lives.

In the Scriptures, we see countless examples of men called to lead in extraordinary ways. Moses, David, and Paul were ordinary men chosen for exceptional tasks. They faced challenges, doubts, and fears—but they also trusted in God’s guidance and were willing to step out in faith. You, too, are called to lead in your way. Whether leading your family with love and wisdom, influencing others in your workplace, or serving your community, your leadership matters.

Godly Leadership: A Different Kind of Impact

So, what does Godly leadership look like? It means leading with purpose, rooted in faith. It’s about more than just being in charge; it is about setting an example, guiding others, and making a difference. Here are four key principles that define God’s call to leadership:

  1. Lead with Humility: Jesus taught us that the most outstanding leaders serve (Matthew 20:26-28). Authentic leadership doesn’t seek recognition but looks for opportunities to serve others. Like Jesus washing His disciples' feet, leadership involves putting others first, lifting them, and showing them the way.

  2. Lead with Integrity: Proverbs 10:9 tells us, “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely.” A leader’s character is foundational. You must stand firm in your faith and be willing to make difficult decisions that honor God, even when it’s hard.

  3. Lead with Vision: Nehemiah had a clear vision from God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, and he inspired others to join him in that mission (Nehemiah 2:17). Leadership requires vision—a clear understanding of where God is leading you and a commitment to guiding others toward that goal.

  4. Lead with Love: 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes the qualities of love: patience, kindness, humility, and forgiveness. As a leader, love should be the driving force behind your decisions and actions. It should be the foundation of your family, work, and community leadership.

Building a Personal Leadership Plan

God has uniquely equipped you for the leadership He’s called you to. But leadership doesn’t happen by accident. It takes intentionality, planning, and growth. Here’s how you can begin to develop a personal leadership plan:

  1. Assess Your Strengths and Weaknesses: Take some time to reflect on where you excel as a leader and where you need to grow. Do you struggle with consistency or clarity when leading? Identifying areas for improvement is the first step toward growth.

  2. Set Godly Goals: Set specific leadership goals in key areas of your life. Focus on leading more effectively in your family, work, and community. Write these goals down and revisit them regularly.

  3. Create Actionable Steps: Develop a plan to achieve those goals. This could include developing your emotional intelligence, learning new leadership skills, or creating a routine that helps you stay focused and spiritually grounded.

  4. Seek Accountability and Support: Leadership can be challenging, but you don’t have to do it alone. Find other men committed to growing in their leadership and hold each other accountable. You can do this through small groups, mentorship, or coaching.

Overcoming Challenges in Leadership

Leadership often comes with challenges. Whether you fear failure, doubt your abilities, or feel overwhelmed, addressing these obstacles head-on is essential. The good news is that you don’t have to rely on your strength. As Joshua 1:9 reminds us, God promises to be with us wherever we go, giving us the courage and wisdom to lead effectively.

Here are some practical steps to overcome common leadership challenges:

  • Overcome Fear and Doubt: Trust in God’s power, not your abilities. Lead with faith, knowing that He will equip you for the task.

  • Balance Your Time: Balancing responsibilities is essential for family, work, and community leadership. Prioritize what matters most and be intentional with your time.

  • Stay Resilient: Leadership isn’t always easy. Perseverance and resilience, grounded in God’s strength, are key to long-term success.

Take the Next Step in Your Leadership Journey

The key to effective leadership is not striving for perfection but embracing the journey. You were made to lead in a way that reflects God’s love and purpose. It’s time to step into the leadership role God has called you to, whether that means leading your family more intentionally, taking on a new role at work, or serving in your community.

Don’t wait for the perfect moment to start. Start now. Seek God’s guidance, commit to growth, and build a legacy of leadership that honors Him. If you’re ready to take that next step, I’m here to help you.

God has called you to lead—answer the call, and let’s build a legacy of faith, integrity, and impact together.
